Nice summary Teddy!
Studies have shown that energy monitoring alone can motivate 5-15% energy bill reduction. If you're chomping at the bit to start monitoring today, there are a couple of options available. For a DIY solution, the Power Monitor by Black & Decker (~$100) works alright or for the more ambitious, try out The Energy Detective (~$250 + installation).
That's just the tip of the iceberg though. I'm part of a Durham, NC-based startup working on using electricity monitoring data to help people cut their energy bills in half. Sign up for more info at plotwatt.com
