For UNC Grad students, Seniors or Juniors: Rural Sustainability Outreach ISD/CGI Internship Award

Application Deadline:September 24, 2010 at 5pm
The internship runs from October 1, 2010 through April 27, 2010

The Institute for Sustainable Development Green Plus program is a triple bottom line sustainability education and certification program for smaller enterprises that was started by leadership at UNC.  The short-hand version of the Institute’s mission is ‘sustainability for everyone.’  In line with that mission, the Institute partnered with the North Carolina Rural Center to put 25 rural North Carolina businesses through the Green Plus program.  At the end of the first stage of the learning process, the businesses may be eligible for green micro loans of up to $25,000 from the Rural Center.

The Green Plus program consists of an 86 question online diagnostic survey in the areas of People, Planet, and Performance and a Diagnostic Report prepared by graduate student Fellows.  A key supplementary resource to the survey is the online How To Guide, with content and links to resources to assist clients as they go through the process.  As rural clients will have different needs from urban and suburban clients, the Institute seeks an energetic and dedicated student intern to provide outreach support to rural clients.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

1) Outreach to rural businesses interested in the program to help them understand the benefits of going green and sustainable and help them sign up for the program

2) Email and phone support to participating rural clients to answer questions, provide research assistance on topics of sustainability, troubleshoot, and provide encouragement as they go through the program

3) 2-3 possible field visits for in-person dialogues and support

4) Serve as a liaison with the North Carolina Rural Center in the micro loan process

This internship is open to both graduate and undergraduate students. Uundergraduate applicants must be at least a current Junior to be considered.  Interns must be able to travel to the Durham office of the Institute for semi-regular meetings.

The following students are not eligible to apply:
