Optimax Systems, Inc., founded in 1991, manufactures optics prototypes. With over 140 workers, Optimax brings in revenues of nearly $15 million with a steady stream of defense, semiconductor, medical and aerospace clients. They have a lean management staff with 90% of their workers making up the manufacturing team. Rick Plympton, CEO, says, “As we have grown the business, we wanted to create a place where people could take pride in their work, continue to add value and provide a good lifestyle for their family.” This embodies the atmosphere and philosophy of work at Optimax. It has an intentional culture which focuses on on continuous improvement, respect for people, and teamwork. There are bonuses offered that drive behavior, team peer reviews, mentoring, on-the-job-training, and external development.

Much of Optimax’s success is due to its dynamic, team-based culture, enlightened management practices, lean operation and innovative approaches to recruiting and retaining its production workforce. The Hitachi Foundation, a Green Plus partner, has helped publicize Optimax Systems, Inc.’s efforts and has helped make it a leading employer in the industry.
