Kirsten Hausman, of the Institute for Sustainable Development, says the Green Plus certification helps small businesses to meet a triple bottom line of sustainability, performance and social responsibility.
Piedmont Electric, Chapel Hill Tire Car Care Center, and the Chapel Hill-Carrboro Chamber of Commerce are among nearly thirty organizations nationwide to earn the Green Plus certification.
Hausman says the folks at Chapel Hill Tire in particular are taking sustainability to the next level.
The Chapel Hill-Carrboro Chamber of Commerce is one of the first in the nation to be awarded the certification. Hausman says the Chamber accomplished this goal by partnering with another local agency dedicated to promoting renewable resources.
In another first, Piedmont Electric Membership Corporation is the only electric utility to qualify for the certification to date. The not-for-profit, consumer owned cooperative is based in Hillsborough and serves more than 30 thousand customers.”
