Since then, the Green Plus team has worked with the ACCE not only to help American small business, but to share best practices in sustainability led by cities and local chambers across the country. Many Big companies have put the time and resources into developing sustainability as a new competitive advantage; we’re proud to partner with the American Chamber of Commerce Executives to make sure the little guys catch the wave, too.

Speaking of catching the wave, our team will be at the annual ACCE Conference in Los Angeles the week of August 2nd. If you’re in town, please stop by – we’d love to meet you.

(From the Chattanooga Times Free Press) “A group of national business and environmental leaders last week honored Chattanooga’s economic development agency for bringing Volkswagen to what was formerly one of the most polluted sites in the South.

space

J.Ed. Marston, vice president of marketing and communication for the Chattanooga Area Chamber of Commerce, said the Volks-wagen project was “a green plant, producing a green product in a green city.” “Basically, Chattanooga made the intangibles tangible,” Marston said.

space

Volkswagen built its $1 billion plant, which will produce its Passat, on the site of what was once the Volunteer Army Ammunition Plant, a TNT manufacturing center built to help defeat Nazi Germany and the Axis powers in World War II. When the Army ceased munitions production after the Vietnam War, the military left much of the 6,700-acre site contaminated in its soil and in water underground.

space

But after an extensive cleanup, the bunker-dotted landscape was converted into a series of walking and biking trails, as well as a ‘green’ industrial park for Amazon and Volkswagen and its suppliers. The award ceremony was designed to bridge the perceived gap between environmental activists and business leaders, who are sometimes seen as taking opposite stands on cleaning up the environment.

space

“What we think, and one of the reasons we do this type of award, is there’s a civil discussion that has to start with many communities and filter its way up through to Republicans and Democrats in Washington,” said Chris Carmody, executive director for the Institute for Sustainable Development. Though some companies have pursued market-driven green projects as a way to stay one step ahead of regulators, Carmody sees sustainable practices as good business.

space

“Chattanooga is a national example of why good business practices and good environmental practices should go hand in hand,” he said. “We hope Chattanooga’s story gets told all over the country and has an impact on decision-making in Washington.”

space

The honor was conferred by the Institute for Sustainable Development, Partners for Livable Communities and the American Chamber of Commerce Executives.”

About the Winners: The 2011 Green Plus Community Awards

Cleveland, Ohio

Always an innovator in public-private partnerships, Cleveland, Ohio has outdone itself in creating a community-wide effort to spur sustainable economic development. Under the leadership of Mayor Frank Jackson, Cleveland city government has led to Sustainable Cleveland: 2019 — a ten-year sustainability planning process involving thousands of area residents. Cleveland has also created one of the most ambitions PACE districts in the U.S. – the Northeast Ohio Advanced Energy District - and implemented a first-of-its kind policy rewarding bidders on city contracts for their sustainability efforts. The Cleveland Foundation - the oldest community foundation in the United States – is driving Evergreen Cooperatives‘ Foundation financed, employee-owned, green enterprises in some of the city’s most economically challenged neighborhoods. Last year, Cleveland’s chamber of commerce (the Greater Cleveland Partnership / Council of the Smaller Enterprises) was recognized for its partnership with the Ohio Department of Energy to help small businesses save and make money through energy efficiency.

Savannah, Georgia

Mayor Otis Johnson and members of Savannah’s City Council have led an aggressive effort to make Savannah a more environmentally sustainable community with programs like Thrive. Thrive is a process City Government began in late 2007, when staff started collecting data from throughout the City to establish the size of Savannah’s carbon footprint. The City conducted employee commuter surveys and analyzed electricity consumption, fuel usage, and gas emissions. By plugging all of this data into a formula created by the International Council for Local Environmental Initiatives, a measurement of the city’s carbon footprint was established and reduction goals were set.

In recent years Savannah has been pro-active in converting all of its traffic lights to more energy-efficient LED’s. It has expanded its use of treated wastewater for irrigation, and has been a leader in adopting Georgia’s first graywater re-used ordinance. All 2,500 City employees have been tasked with coming up with ideas to create a healthier environment for Savannah residents. The City is looking at the way it operates its vehicles – from idling policies to the routes employees take. City government is also installing energy-efficient bulbs, and motion detectors to turn them off when no one’s around. The City is looking at everything from the kinds of computers and printers it buys to the kinds of materials it builds with to the latest technology that converts waste into energy.

North Myrtle Beach, South Carolina

The North Strand Coastal Wind Team was formed with the goal of turning North Myrtle Beach into a demonstration city for energy independence and success in the green economy. The public-private partnership comprises the North Myrtle Beach Chamber of Commerce, city government, the Savannah River National Laboratory, Coastal Carolina University’s Center for Marine and Wetland Studies, the Myrtle Beach Regional Economic Development Authority, and the South Carolina Energy Office. Together, these organizations took the first step in bringing wind energy to North Myrtle Beach.

2011 Green Plus Chamber of Commerce Winners

Chattanooga Area Chamber of Commerce (TN): Clean Air, Clean Industries

In 1969, Chattanooga was noted for having the worst air quality in the United States. Chattanooga’s exceptional success in cleaning up its air quality led it to attract new companies that shared the city’s environmental values – notably the first U.S. home of Volkswagen AG’s manufacturing operations. Volkswagen is investing about one billion US dollars in the development of the facility at Chattanooga, which will be among the world’s most advanced and environmentally compatible automobile plants. 1,700 people are already employed directly by Volkswagen in Chattanooga. 10,000 additional jobs will be created in the U.S. component supply industry.

Gatlinburg (TN) Chamber of Commerce

In 2008, the Gatlinburg Chamber launched the Gatlinburg Goes Green program with the goal of educating and recognizing its members for taking steps to minimize their environmental impact. One of the first of its kind across the country, the program goes hand in hand with the city’s efforts to keep Gatlinburg, the gateway to Smoky Mountain National Park, healthy and thriving. Over 75% of the Gatlinburg Chambers members have participated in the program to date.

About the Institute for Sustainable Development and Green Plus
The Institute for Sustainable Development partners nationwide with the American Chamber of Commerce Executives to bring Green Plus, its business improvement program, to smaller enterprises in the U.S. and Canada. The non-profit was founded in the North Carolina Research Triangle in 2007 by a unique partnership of academic, business and philanthropic leaders. Early partners included Duke University and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, the Chapel Hill-Carrboro and Greater Durham Chambers of Commerce, and the Fenwick Foundation.

Institute founders recognized that while many large companies were integrating sustainability into their operations, saving money and improving their reputations, most Americans were employed by businesses with 50 or fewer people, and these smaller employers had neither the time nor the financial resources to pursue sustainability. In the fall of 2007, the Institute engaged the Center for Sustainable Enterprise at UNC’s Kenan Flagler School of Business to develop a business plan to address this problem. This plan led to the development of Green Plus, a program to educate, network and recognize smaller employers in their efforts to achieve triple bottom line sustainability.

The Institute partnership comprises seventeen regional chambers of commerce and representatives from Duke University, Durham Technical Community College, Elon University, and University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

Chris Carmody, Executive Director of the Institute, said, “We have been working with exceptionally talented NC State students since the spring, and we’re delighted to have Dr. Winner represent the University in this great partnership. The combination of NC State with Duke University, Durham Tech, Elon and UNC Chapel Hill will be another potent force to advance a sustainable and prosperous economy in this region,” Carmody concluded.

At a national level, the Institute partners with the American Chamber of Commerce Executives. The Institute’s university-chamber of commerce partnership educates, connects, and recognizes smaller enterprises pursuing triple bottom line sustainability through its Green Plus™ program in twelve states. Green Plus™ organizations are assessed and assisted by graduate students from participating universities in improving their business, environmental, community and employee practices. Green Plus™businesses use sustainable practices to save and make money, and become part of a network of businesses pursuing the same goals. Enterprises with exceptional ratings in People, Planet and Performance categories can earn Green Plus™ Certification. Non-profit organizations can also take advantage of the Green Plus™ program.

Dr. William Winner, Co-Sustainability Officer and Professor, Dept. of Forestry & Environmental Resources, will represent NC State on the Institute’s Board.

“NC State University is proud of our accomplishments in building sustainability into the missions of learning, discovery, and engagement,” said Dr. Winner. “In addition, we are proud of efforts to advance sustainability across the operations of the University.” Winner continued, “The effect is to bring the issue of sustainability to students in ways that prepare them for future activities, and are expressed in their future careers, professional and graduate academic programs, and lives as citizens,” concluded Winner.

In the new partnership, NC State students will receive Green Plus™ training and work along side students from other Institute university partners to assist smaller employers in improving their business, environmental, community and employee practices. In 2010, Green Plus™ Fellows from six universities worked with chambers and Green Plus small businesses in Arkansas, Ohio, North Carolina, New Jersey, South Carolina in person and with businesses from seven other states online.

About North Carolina State University

NC State University is noted for development of public/private partnerships that link its faculty members and students to the development of enterprise in North Carolina and beyond. It has specific programs in the Sustainability Office to promote activities on

campus. In addition, NC State’s Cooperative Extension and Industrial Extension programs extend ideas about sustainability to thousands of state residents. The Solar Center provides continuing education and information to the public through websites to help citizens learn of opportunities to finance Energy Star purchases and other resource conservation measures.

Many research programs at the University are developing the new technologies and policies needed to advance sustainability across the public and private sector. An example of an exciting research program is the FREEDM Systems Center, funded by the National Science Foundation, to accelerate research and development of the Smart Grid.

The newly revised Environmental Sciences Academic Program is now providing new courses and curricula to students interested in the topics of sustainability. The revised ES Academic Program will provide students with opportunities for a flexible course selection, extensive studies in areas chosen by faculty members and students, and discovery based learning so students learn how to complete projects related to energy, environment, and sustainability.

About Dr. Winner

Dr. Winner was named Co-Sustainability Officer in August, 2009. He also serves as the co-chair of the Campus Environmental Sustainability Team (C.E.S.T.). Dr. Winner received his Ph. D. in Biology from the University of Calgary in 1978, and previously held academic positions at Stanford University, Virginia Tech and Oregon State University. Between 2003-2006, Dr. Winner served at the National Science Foundation. Dr. Winner is an internationally recognized scientist in the field of plant physiological ecology, and co-edited several books. At NC State University, Dr. Winner is a professor in the Department of Forestry and Environmental Resources, Coordinator for the academic programs in environmental sciences, and Coordinator for the NCSU Energy Council.

About the Institute for Sustainable Development

In the fall of 2007, the Institute engaged the Center for Sustainable Enterprise at UNC Chapel Hill’s Kenan-Flagler Business School to develop a business plan to address this problem. This plan led to the development of Green Plus, a program that provides training, networking, and recognition for small businesses and non-profits working toward becoming more competitive and sustainable.

A vital part of Green Plus™ is providing real-life experiences to university students in the area of business and sustainability by connecting the students with real organizations engaged with these issues. The Institute trains interdisciplinary teams of graduate students and professionals to provide practical, affordable tools and assistance to help smaller enterprises and their communities become stronger, healthier, and more competitive. To date, more than 160 businesses and non-profits in more than twelve U.S. states have benefited from the Green Plus™ program.

Five businesses achieve Green Plus™ Certification, Forty-one others complete first phase of certification process

Forty-six businesses were recognized for their dedication to triple bottom line sustainability in the Green Plus TM by the Institute for Sustainable Development. Five businesses in North Carolina and Pennsylvania obtained Green Plus TM certification, while thirty-nine others throughout the Midwest and Southeast were recognized for taking the first step in the program and are now Green Plus TM Movers . Organizations that received the full Green Plus TM Certification are A Better Image Printing (NC), Environmental Solutions Group (NC), King’s Daughters Inn (NC), Quality Staffing (NC), and Wohlsen Construction Company (PA).

“We are proud to be working with organizations that are setting the example for smaller enterprise sustainability,” said Chris Carmody, Institute for Sustainable Development Executive Director. ”We are motivated by our clients’ commitment to the environment and their communities. Their involvement is what makes Green Plus a great community hub for sharing best practices and helping American small businesses understand that sustainability is a growth opportunity.”

“Going through the Green Plus TM Certification was very satisfying,” said Diana Minta, owner of A Better Image Printing. ”It helped me realize that [we] already had many green and sustainable processes in place, like employee benefits, giving back to our community and planning for the future. At the same time we had room to improve. The certification process gave me the tools and motivation to strive for that improvement. Thanks for making [this program] available,” Minta concluded.

The Green Plus TM program helps educate and certify small businesses and nonprofit organizations in the areas of triple bottom line sustainability (People, Planet, and Performance). A program of the Institute for Sustainable Development, Green PlusTM focuses on an organization’s policies and procedures and therefore applies to businesses across sectors and industries. The first step in the program is completing the 86 question diagnostic survey, after which an organization is acknowledged as a Green Plus TM Mover. This new class of Green Plus TM Movers includes: Allora Consulting, LLC, AlphaGraphics Cary, Aramark at the R. David Thomas Executive Conference Center, Armadillo Books, Avista Resort, ActionCOACH – Ben Quinn, Carpe Diem Cleaning, Columbus Area Chamber of Commerce, Communication Matters, Council of Smaller Enterprises (COSE), Damon’s Grill, Dos Perros Restaurant, Downtown Raleigh Alliance, EcoSelect Furniture, Elliot Realty, Fleetwood Fixtures, Florida Institute of Certified Public Accountants, Flowers by Paulette, Greater Durham Chamber of Commerce, Greensboro Chamber of Commerce, Grimball Jewelers, Henderson Area Arts Alliance, Hughes Pittman and Gupton, LLP, Horry Telephone Cooperative, Humanitys Loom LLC, Loco For Coco, Lube Stop, Mother Murphys Laboratories, My Green Table, Piedmont Electric Membership Corporation, PlotWatt, Point to Point, R.W.
As many businesses are learning, true triple bottom line sustainability is not something that can be implemented within an organization in a few days, but for those businesses that have made the effort sustainability is a powerful marketing and branding tool that can help differentiate an organization in a competitive marketplace. “We are thrilled to have met this important benchmark in our conservation efforts and we encourage all other hospitality providers, from Bed and Breakfasts to full service hotels to strive for Green Plus TM certification. We look forward to mentoring other B&B’s on integrating green practices and technologies into their business,” declared Colin Crossman, proprietor of The King’s Daughters Inn.

One of the many business benefits of sustainability is a stronger, more vibrant community. For organizations that have been working, not just in a community, but with that community are able to better withstand shifts in the marketplace. ”[Green Plus TM Certification] is a testament to [Wohlsen Construction Company's] leadership, traditions, values and mission. Since 1890, we have strived to maintain the highest level of performance in the construction industry,” said William J. Sutton II, project manager for Wohlsen. ”We also have had to continue to reinvent our company and improve in all facets of our business. Receiving this certification is an outstanding achievement and validation for our company and our employees. In the area of environmental stewardship, we lead by example for our community, our clients and the generations to come,” stated Sutton.

A part of the Institute’s mission is to expand sustainability knowledge and through Green Plus TM employers now have a way of engaging their employees and encouraging them to take that information home at the end of the day. ”Quality Staffing Specialist is committed to being a sustainable producer of services in all of its markets. I want to express my thanks to our dedicated staff for their hard work in making it possible to achieve this award of excellence,” said Phyllis Eller-Moffett, president of Quality Staffing Specialists. ”Having gone through the certification process, everyone on the staff has become more aware of how little changes in their behavior have saved the company a great deal on our bottom line while giving them the satisfaction that creating new habits they can bring to the workplace and their homes.”

Every organization that completes the first step of the Green Plus TM program is also eligible for national recognition through the North American Sustainable Enterprise awards (NASE). The Green Plus TM NASE Awards will take place Friday, June 18, 2010, from 7:45 to 9:45am EST, in North Carolina’s Research Triangle Park.
The King’s Daughters Inn – Durham, NC (www.thekingsdaughtersinn.com)

Whoever said green and luxury don’t do together hasn’t had the pleasure of visiting the King’s Daughters Inn B&B. This boutique hotel, opened in April 2009, is run by Deanna and Colin Crossman and is located across the street from Duke’s East Campus near downtown Durham, NC. The Crossmans purchased the historical property and spent the better part of two years renovating the building, which was originally built as a residence for a dormitory-style retirement home, into a luxury boutique bed & breakfast.

Though many said that renovating an historical property into an eco-boutique B&B was impossible, the Crossmans proved otherwise. Among other measures, each room has its own total energy management system, they installed a gray water system to reduce indoor water usage, a 10,000 gallon rain water cistern for irrigation, used porous concrete in the parking lot, created a rain garden, installed low-flow fixtures in each bathroom, and LED lighting (light emiting diodes) where possible.

“The focus of the North Myrtle Beach Chamber is on a sustainable economy for our city and region. We see Green Plus™ as a visioning and valuable tool to assist our members in creating sustainability plans for their businesses,” stated Marc Jordan, President/CEO of the Chamber.

The program is available at a substantial discount through participating chambers of commerce throughout the U.S. and Canada in the 1,300 chamber ACCE network. The ACCE and the Institute for Sustainable Development conduct the annual Green Plus North American Sustainable Enterprise Awards which gives participating small businesses the opportunity to gain tremendous exposure for their efforts toward triple bottom line sustainability.

“There are many great home-grown sustainability efforts already going on in our region,” said Jordan. “Green Plus™ gives our members the opportunity to both learn new practices and share their own knowledge across North America – while also opening up new business opportunities,” he added.

“On a personal level, I applaud your vision and leadership for involving the Chamber and local businesses in making North Myrtle Beach more sustainable,” stated Daniel Abel, Ph.D., Director, CCU Sustainability Initiative.

Green Plus™ was developed by the North Carolina Research Triangle based Institute for Sustainable Development - a combined effort of universities and chambers of commerce to provide smaller employers with affordable tools to improve their triple bottom line sustainability. The Green Plus™ model was developed by University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill’s Kenan-Flagler School of Business in 2007. UNC Chapel Hill and Duke University developed online sustainability tools for small business that were tested in Ohio and North Carolina throughout 2008.

“Smaller enterprises employ most North Americans and are the key engine of new job creation,” said Chris Carmody, Director of the Institute for Sustainable Development. “Large employers have benefited greatly from their sustainability efforts. Green Plus™ was created to give small employers the same opportunities to save and make money while going green and being sustainable,” Carmody continued. “The North Myrtle Beach Chamber’s emphasis on sustainable economic growth makes it an ideal Green Plus™ partner,” Carmody concluded.

To help promote the Green Plus™ program the North Myrtle Beach Chamber of Commerce has recruited “ECO” the Starfish. ECO is asking members to “Go Green” by signing up for this valuable program. As of January 26th, the following businesses have signed up as Charter Members of the Green Plus™ Program: A&I Fire Water & Restoration, Avista Resort, Damon’s Grill, Elliott Realty, HTC and Ocean Drive Beach & Golf Resort.

The North Myrtle Beach Chamber of Commerce Convention & Visitors Bureau has been serving the local community for the past 10 years. The mission of the North Myrtle Beach Chamber of Commerce is to be recognized as the premier business organization serving the North Myrtle Beach area and its business members by providing quality products, programs, and services while influencing issues that enhance the economic prosperity of our community. In August 2009, the Accrediting Board of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce designated the North Myrtle Beach Chamber as an Accredited chamber with 4-Stars.
